Drain Cleaning in Upland, CA: Slow Sinks, Backed-Up Tubs and Clogs That Keep Coming Back
A drain that clears and blocks again a few weeks later is not the same problem as a drain that blocks once. The second one is a clog. The first one is the pipe telling you something about its condition.
This page covers interior lines, yard and area drains, and commercial kitchen waste. High pressure jetting is its own service, and anything in the main lateral out to the street belongs on the sewer page.

Tell dispatch which fixtures are affected and whether this line has blocked before. call dispatch on (833) 571-0120 with those two answers ready.
Kitchen, bath and laundry lines block for different reasons
Kitchen lines block with grease and food solids, and they do it gradually. Fat goes down warm and liquid, cools inside the pipe, and lays down a layer that narrows the bore month by month until something ordinary finally stops it.
Bath and shower lines block with hair bound into soap residue, usually within the first few feet of the trap and tailpiece. Laundry lines block with lint, and in older houses with a standpipe that was never sized generously, they surcharge rather than block outright.
Those are three different jobs with three different tools, which is why a plumber will ask which fixtures are affected before quoting anything. One slow fixture is local. Several at once usually means it has moved into the main sewer line, which changes the whole approach.
Signs the problem is past the fixture and into the main
- More than one fixture is slow or backing up at the same time
- A toilet bubbles when the washing machine drains
- Flushing a toilet pushes water up into a nearby shower tray. A pan that blocks on its own, with everything else draining, is a toilet fault instead
- The lowest fixture in the house is the one that backs up first
- You can hear gurgling from a drain you are not using

Why the camera goes down after the line is open
Clearing the blockage restores flow. It does not tell you why the blockage formed, and on a line with a history that is the question worth answering.
A camera run shows the three things that change the recommendation: scale and grease on the pipe wall, a root mass at a joint, and a low section holding water where the pipe has settled. Each of those leads somewhere different, and none of them are visible from the fixture end.
It also gives you a reference point. If the same line is cleared again in two years, a second camera run against the first shows whether it is getting worse or holding steady, which is the difference between maintenance and a repair plan.
If a line has been cleared before and come back, say so on the call. It changes what gets booked.
Call (833) 571-0120Yard drains, area drains and the December problem
Upland gets about 16.7 inches of rain a year and nearly all of it arrives between December and March. February is the wettest of them at roughly 4.2 inches, and August is effectively dry.
That shape is why yard and area drains fail the way they do here. They sit unused through a long dry season, silt and leaf litter settle into them, and the first serious storm finds the blockage for you at the worst possible moment.
Clearing them is straightforward work and it is worth doing in November rather than January. The same applies to any French drain or channel drain on a sloping lot, and in a city dropping roughly 800 feet from its northern edge down to its southern one, most lots slope.
Commercial kitchen and grease waste lines
A restaurant line is a different job from a domestic one. The volume of fat is higher, the line runs hotter, and the consequences of a backup land during service rather than on a Sunday afternoon.
These lines want a scheduled interval rather than a reactive call, and they want high pressure jetting rather than cabling, because a cable through a greased line leaves the grease on the wall. The City's own record of what fouls public sewer mains at its problem locations lists grease alongside roots and wipes, which is the same material arriving from the same sources.

Drain maintenance timing based on the City's two-year sewer flush
Upland's public sewer gets cleaned on a published schedule rather than on complaint. All 1,095,000 feet of it gets a flush on a two year cycle at worst, whether anything has gone wrong or not.
Segments with a known problem go on a much shorter cycle. Take the Loma Sola roots line, which went to a two month cycle from a quarterly one in June 2025. Roots, grease, buildup and wipes make up the City's own list of what it finds at those locations.
That is a useful benchmark for a private line. If the public main serving your street needs attention every eight weeks, a lateral with a root history is not a line to leave for five years and hope.

Intervals, repeat blockages and what a camera adds
Mostly about intervals, repeat blockages and what a camera adds. For anything else, call (833) 571-0120.
Why does the same drain keep blocking after it has been cleared?
Because clearing a clog and restoring a pipe are different outcomes. A cable punched through a blockage opens a channel the width of the cable head, and the material around it stays on the pipe wall. On a line that has scale, a belly, or roots at a joint, that channel closes again in weeks. The way to tell which you have is to put a camera down after the line is open and look at the pipe rather than guess.
How often should household drains be cleaned?
For an ordinary household with no history of trouble, every 18 to 24 months is a reasonable interval. Worth knowing: the City of Upland cleans and flushes every public sewer main at least once every 24 months, and hits designated problem segments every two months. If the public main in your street is on an eight week cycle, a private lateral feeding into it is not somewhere to stretch the interval.
Can a clogged drain damage the pipe?
The blockage itself does not, but what people do about it sometimes does. Caustic drain openers sit against the pipe wall when they fail to clear the blockage, and on older pipe they accelerate what is already happening. Repeated aggressive cabling on brittle clay or badly scaled cast iron can take chunks out of a pipe that was marginal already. That is the argument for looking before working, not after.
What does a drain cleaning cost here?
Mechanical cabling of an interior line sits at the lower end, and a main line with poor cleanout access sits higher, because the time is in getting to the line rather than clearing it. A camera inspection is usually priced separately or folded in when the line has a history. The cost guide lists the ranges and the factors that move them, and you get the number before anyone starts.
Do I need a permit, or a licensed contractor, to have a drain cleared?
Clearing a drain does not need a permit. Repairing or replacing the pipe does: the City of Upland lists water, sewer and gas line installation or repair as permit work. On the contractor question, you can check any licence yourself on the California Contractors State License Board License Check tool. It costs nothing, it is quick, and it is the one check that does not depend on trusting anybody.
